TF2 how to zip the maps for fast download
i need to know what program to zip the maps and where to place them.
also what needs to be changed in the mapcycles.txt so the server knows what file.
i run only arena maps on my tf2 server. andi have many great maps but i loose allot of people during downloading

Download and install 7zip if your on a windows server and then find the file and right click > Add to archive. Select archive type of 'Bzip2' on the 'Ultra' setting and then save the file to your 'maps' folder. The server will then push down the compressed version and play with the decompressed versions. If you happen to have a 'sv_fastdownload' host then place the zipped files on that host in the maps folder and your done.

If your on a linux host you can use the 'bzip2' command line to zip the files from the command line via SSH.

bzip2 -z -9 filename.bsp

Will pack the file as filename.bsp.bzip2 in the dir you run from then just copy that file into your maps folder on the game host or the sv_fastdownload and your set.

ok i got 7zip i just needed to know the file renaming part, thanks a ton i got it
also do the uncompressed maps need to be in the maps folder on the server as well?

Yes your server should always have decompressed versions of the maps in its maps folder. It can also have the compressed versions that will be served unless they are being served via a sv_fastdownload host.

ok i have my server set for fast download and my maps zipped and uploaded to the fast download site.
i also have my quake sounds on the fast download site.

now when i have the UNcompressed maps on the game server and the zipped maps on the fast download site what maps will the players download?
compressed or raw?
if i dont have the raw maps in the maps folder i cannot manually load via sourcemod admin or beetlesmod admin.
i want the zipped compressed maps to be used will they be used by default?

i ask this becasue i have the fast url set and the quake sounds download from it but when m,aps load it loads the uncompressed from the server. how do i make it load the zipped maps by default?

Make sure that sv_allowdownload is 1
