Valve posted earlier today that the next TF2 update (coming soon) is going to feature rebalancing of a number of maps. pl_badwater was the only one listed by name. Changes to rebalance against newer items make up the majority of the changes.

Oh, and they're adding cp_standin and cp_process as new Community maps.

The most obvious downside is that updating every map in the game will make for a very large update... maps make up about a quarter of the game's total size (I think) and over half of the dedicated server's size.

Strategies Valve has mentioned are going to be nerfed:
  • Jumper spawn-camping. Yes, this means you'll likely see the two Jumper items nerfed or see skyboxes lowered.
  • Sentry-jumping sentries to cheap areas (hopefully including Badwater Point B angled roof, Egypt arch, Thundermountain tower angled roof)
  • Placing buildings in spawns. Which is a bug anyway...

That'll be a fun download. About 2.75 GB if my stock maps folder is anything to go by. Of course Valve won't be changing all the maps. I hope.

No, but they did say the majority. There are currently... checks dedicated server... 61 maps included in the game that aren't training maps, background01, or itemtest. Which means they're changing at least 31 maps.

Which would imply at least 1 GB. Pity that Egypt and Thunder Mountain are some of the biggest maps there. On the other hand, lowering skyboxes may decrease the file size a fair amount.

At least SteamPipe has made downloads considerably faster. And the server no longer needs the sound files (yay).

I'm not happy with the CP map additions, they are not really new. I'd rather see some VALVE made regular payload maps. If they intend to do things to them then mix them up a little as in shift gold rush around or backwards run it etc.

They're new to the quickplayers at least. I wonder if they're updating all the maps or just quickplay maps.

Well as I said it wouldn't kill them to say put Goldrush or give you the option to run it backwards since its a 3 stage map.
