I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on a VM. Running without any issue. you can use Ubuntu. If you're gonna use the GUI, then you have to install the VMWare guest tools which allows the screen to fit correctly.

Running a server on your pc that you use to play isn't right as it causes issue like your "game already running" problem

Use a VM and it solves almost everything.

PS: Use a bridged connection for your VM

I just tried it and got the same thing. Guess the only thing you can do is run the server on a different machine than the one you play on (which is always recommended anyways)
