Hello Forum,

I am going to upgrade my server soon. The server is going to be used primarily as a root for gameservers, Teamspeak and Apache/MySQL (low-load for the gameservers and TS). I would be pleased about some input. There are currently 2 server configs on the agenda:

2 x Opteron 1381 with 4 GB RAM
or
1 x Xeon E3-1230v2 with 8 GB RAM

The gameserver should be able to run at least 4 gameserver, respectively 8 in case of the Intel, what shouldn´t be a problem. I will use Debian x64, no RT-Kernel or any useless FPS or tick upgrades expected.

The E3-1230v2 hands down, you won't be disappointed.

Opteron 1381 specs CPU Frequency is 2.5 Ghz

Xeon E3-1230v2 specs CPU Frequency is 3.3 Ghz

I would pick the Xeon E3-1230v2
Core raw speed is everything.

but wouldn't he get 8 cores with the 2 x Opteron 1381?

he could throw in more ram and run more servers smoothly i think.

The Valve engine is not really able to access more than one core.
The faster core of the Xeon E3-1230v2 would allow the game server to perform better.

Hi Guys,

thanks for your answers I ordered the Intel Xeon, but with 16 GB. I will start a few test with a few Source Server to check if the the Xeon will act like I would expect it for 8 cores.
