Cron jobs are NOT needed to run the daemon, but are used to keep it running in case it crashes, The cron jobs just run the scripts to update the daily awards and the daily maintenance.
It looks like your firewall is blocking the traffic, it can be on the game server side or the webhost, but if the logs are saying that there is no traffic for X seconds then something is stooping that traffic (99% of the time a firewall, 1% SELinux policy but that is RELY rare)
