Using the rate calculator (which was linked to from one of the links in bmann_420's post), we can see that you probably don't want more than 4-5 people connecting from the outside. You need more upload bandwith. -- Andy |

Thanks for linking to my rate calculator :) only just noticed from a Google Analytics report
There is a mirror of it here [ http://sc.multiplay.co.uk/drekrates.php ] in case my home web server is offline. I'm also looking to include a better hardware calculation for recommended players soon, mainly to take into account multiple processors. |

AdamR... I cant believe I never put that together. I see you on irc also, i feel like a retard. ;) anyway, its an awesome calculator, and helped through some times of "home servers" back in teh day. I appreciate everything you have done for sure.

No problem :) I'm going to add a section about sys_ticrate soon, mainly a copy of the guide I wrote about it here:

there is a waring beside sv_maxupdaterate and sv_maxrate !!
http://i38.tinypic.com/1osq9t.gif what will be the effect of too low value? and my Upload Connection is:: 200 Kbps Upload Speed is:: 25 kB/s can i run 10 player slots? |
Re: Server Management 101 (Tips on running HLDS & Much More)
25 kbps sounds like you're on a dial-up connection. You'd be lucky to get a 2 player server on that!
Are you sure you did the speed test correctly? It also looks like you've entered 2.53 MHz in the CPU speed. If your processor is 2.53 GHz, then you should enter 2530 in the CPU speed. |
Re: Server Management 101 (Tips on running HLDS & Much More)

Re: Server Management 101 (Tips on running HLDS & Much More)
Bumpidy bump bump.
For the record I've updated the calculator to account for multiple cores, and can recommend up to 64 slots. If your hardware turns out to be better it'll just say 64+. The code for this probably needs some tweaking. Also you can input your primary memory in GB and TB. |
