Reply With Quote #1

Hi there, after having servers in several GSP's that always end up having DDoS attacks I decided that I will not stick with any GSP ever again. So I'm currently trying to find a decent VPS that actually allows ME to manage what is of my business, but I need some help and advice.

I don't really have a idea of how much CPU, RAM and Traffic I need to run a TF2 24 slot server with a considerable number of plugins being full most of the time. I was planning to run in the same VPS a Joomla or SMF website, SourceBans, HLStatsX and FastDownloads for that gameserver.

I never worked with a VPS before so I don't know if there is much difficulty. I've mastered managing gameservers and webservers so I don't know if upgrading for a VPS will be a big of a hassle.

I would like someone to help me about this questions and maybe give some advice/experience about using VPS for gaming communities.

EDIT: Can a cloud server be used for this purposes too ?

Thanks

So far, I really like Virpus. Their Xen servers with 512 MB of RAM are more than enough for a 24-slot server. Plus, they're really cheap.

Try this

http://fanaticalvps.com/

They are chep (in Germany) and you can test performance. Then do a selection based on your experience.

You need to use Xen for game servers. OpenVZ will not work.

if you are fine with hosting servers in germany then I could suggest you this one:
https://www.proplay.biz/

I'm running a 32slot TF2 server on the vps premium Basic. You can also run a 2nd small server on the same machine.
the servers chould be hosted by hetzner.

Good luck

btw this is only usefull if you dont running a US community.

I would also recommend NFO servers. One of the best companies out there in my opinion. They also mitigate DDOS attacks very well.

Not true at all. OpenVZ actually outperforms Xen in most cases because of the

A) Lower overhead
B) More efficient use of disk IO

If you're going to make bullshit claims like that, please back them up with reasons and/or sources instead of misleading people.

I will be hosting the servers in Portugal. I wouldn't mind having the VPS elsewhere if there wasn't the in-game ping problem. But I also need a affordable solution.

I found:

? CPU / 512MB RAM BURSTABLE / 10GB HDD / 200GB Traffic / Linux

Will this work ? for the TF2 24 slot, webserver with Site, Sourcebans and HLX ?

And about the operting System, which is better ? CentOS, Debian, and so on... ? and in this case 32bits or 64bits?
