No, it isn't a parameter, & just means send the process to background after creating it.

Every server that I have run does that on it's own. Nothing needs added to the command line that I'm aware of (as I've not added anything purposely to make it work like that). Assuming the cause of the crash is not beyond the control of HLDS of course.

You Probably have Old files or something not installed properly on your Box?
This line should work fine.

Code:
 ./hlds_run -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +maxplayers 14 +ip XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX -port 27015 +port 27015 &
Dont forget the & OF COURSE!

& = your server wont crash when Leaving the SSH Program.

You don't need '&' if you put it in another screen dekken.

You don't understand what & actually does. It doesn't stop processes invoked from an SSH session from exiting (which isn't the same as a crash) when you end the session - it only starts the process in the background allowing you to continue entering commands. It's not needed (as already noted) in conjuction with screen because the whole purpose of screen is to create a separate terminal.

I use nemrun to do that, it works just fine: http://www.nephyrin.net/tools/nemrun/
It also does instant updating, but I guess that's not important for hlds.
