I'm getting my new motherboard for the computer I'm building for about $175-$200... There is no reason to go as far as $300.

Well, then, if you have any suggestions...

What's your processor? I can only assume it's AMD socket AM2. However knowing the model would be helpful.

I'm just going to wait for the AMD quad to drop to around 280$ (Canadian)

AMD processors are a ton better than Intel for gaming.

You wish that would happen....... >_> Pfft... 280$ for a quad-core. And in Canadian dollars no less...

And as of now, the Core 2 Duo is the best reasonably priced processor for gaming.

you can't just get a mother board that sais that it has pci-e.. trust if you want something that will last, like what mystic said you need a pci-e 16x all n serius 7 and 8 run on 16x. and if you want to get a good motherboard for the future make sure you get any king that has a sli 680i, and yes it will cost you atleast 300 to 600. my advice to you wait till vista service pack 1 comes out with direct x10 and then then new v-cards and games will come out. if you don't want to wait for that long(6-10 months) then make sure your new computer has a 8800 GTX which is the only card that supports direct x 10 right now

If you're adamant with staying with AMD, then that's OK as AMD's stuff is still decent for gaming. Just find yourself a good AM2 socket mobo (like the one I showed you earlier).

When it come to the Intel Mobos, the 680i SLI is just a bloated version of the 650i. There isn't really any performance difference, the 680i just has a few more USB and SATA ports, some more PCI lanes, full 16x 16x SLI, and a few more features like dual gigabit ethernet etc. (which no one needs to use).

The best bang for the buck for an intel gaming mobo is the 650i series, such as the P5N-E. If you really don't care about money though, then 680i is fine too, just don't get something like the ASUS Striker Extreme, which is like $380 way overpriced.

Oh yeah and the 8800 GTX is not the only DirectX 10 VGA right now, there is the 8800 GTS which is up to $300 less if you look in the right places.

As for AMD being better than Intel for gaming, that's not true. AMD's top of the line processor competes with the e6600, which is like the mid-range Core 2 Duo. If you wait till April 22nd, you will see that Intel will offer much better deals than AMD has right now. About the barcelona, we'll just have to see about that when it comes out but Intel definitely owns the gaming world right now.

Well, at first I specifically didn't like Intel, because it was just.. Intel...

But now they're advertising on 1.6 and basically supporting the ads, which is another reason why I'm specifically against Intel.

Long live AMD.

note overmind, that some 680i boards have an extra pci 16x slot so that makes it 3 -16x pci e slots like hmm xfx and bfg i think
