Why do people always forget to mention the game server that they are trying to run?

Higher CPU frequency - Higher possible tickrate
More cores - More servers

i3 - 3.7GHz - Faster CPU frequency
i3 - Only 2 CPU cores

i5 - 3.2GHz boosted to 3.6GHz - Not as fast as i3
i5 - Has 4 CPU cores - twice as much as the i3

Are you asking in response to what it should run on or what you should run?
As a processor can run on either of those.

That's not a question that can be answered.
Pick your poison. It's up to you with what you need to be done.
Every update it changes, Linux is better one week, Windows the next.
I run both, and I can tell you from experience, neither of them are better of each other.
If anyone tries to tell you otherwise, take it as a grain of salt, because each machine is different and is not a one-size-fits-all.
I've had the best results with Linux running Debian and Windows running 2012 R2
I prefer Linux because of the less overhead and the scripting abilities, but that doesn't mean you need to pick it. Try both, see what works best for YOU!

Linux
  • Easier to script
  • Easier to keep gamedata updated
  • Less server overhead (no need for GUI)
  • Has a working -autoupdate function for servers
  • Has a billion gameserver managing scripts
Windows
  • More intuitive interface
  • Less possible to keep gamedata updated
  • More overheard more resources needed
  • Doesn't have -autoupdate working function
  • Has a few game managing applications

Windows also distributes networking threads over other cpus. This can squeeze a player or two more but sv var is not smooth like linux when your servers are at capacity.
