Rock star also made "Rock star social club" which really looks like steam. The login window is 100% copied at least.

So is cable and satellite tv but you adapt. Obviously the workload over at valve is more then they could handle or there would not be any discussion in this matter. The original purpose of this software was only in a handful of games a few years ago but now it is in almost every game out on the market. The more they take on the more complaints start piling up on the steam forums and elsewhere. The OB update was a disaster and took many of us (server admins) weeks to recover from. Then they did it again in October and again this weekend. Obviously our contributions to them mean nothing so tell me why we bother supporting them? With the costs associated with running a game server, redirect and thats not even mentioning the time involved. And to add insult to injury once is fine but how many times this year have we had to rush to forums to fix our servers?

liquid77, look at things this way: an industry that moves so much money as the gaming industry will not trust the trade of their products to an open source platform. Steam is a platform made by people that needs it to work the way it works and that has a trust force in how it distributes copyrighted content. You can't have an open source solution to that.

-Steam client is a joke (it only closes when it wants too) and wastes memory
-Disregard for server admins and modders

And I could keep going on this but I am sure others will chime in.

Solution
A free alternative that is not biased and open source maybe then the dreadful days of rebuilding a server once a month will be a distant memory
Steam = Free
