STEAM ROCKS!!! gone are the days of trying to resurrect a scratched disc just cause the dog stepped on it or a kid got it or... (insert data loss tragedy here) now we can install the client anywhere we want and play... no muss... and relatively little fuss...
before you demonize them consider what all steam does, and how many peeps use it... are you aware that steam regularely has over 3 million clients on at the same time... cummon genius... i wanna see you set up a server network to carry that kind of traffic... just to make a comparison, WoW servers are full to capacity at 250000 ad lag like shit at half that...
maybe it aint perfect, but it costs you nothing and runs almost flawlessly... how bout a little love for their hard work... no other gaming institution works as hard to keep their stuff current and bug free as valve does... and if you dont like their tools, dump them... as stated above.

Bug free? I lol'd. Opposing force using hl soundtrack. Blue Shift with orange HUD. HL2 with lags, broken skyboxes and animations. L4D with client plugins and server running client commands. L4D2 with BSOD's, shitty console and GUI. Srcds listed as TF2DS. Broken GUIs for L4D and L4D2 Steam DSes. Need I say more?

i didnt say they were bug free, i said they work harder than most to be that... most companies will make you buy a new version of a given peice of software to cure bugs... valve and their subs tend to push these out as free fixes... they make nothing for the countless hours of debugging and recoding... it aint perfect... but you gotta give them some love for the efforts...
if it really did suck they would fail and google would not be trying so damn hard to buy them.. dont get me wrong, i aint no fanboy... it makes me crazy that they refuse to give the mod community a day or so notice of the new offsets and the like... in my mind it makes the updates kind of suck cause the servers are all broken after them... ever body floods online to play with the new stuff and there are no servers... it would be much nice if we could all grab the updated mm and sm/mani or whatever while we were updating our servers...
but i digress... i didnt day they were perfect, i just said they try really hard and dont deserve to be called out for useless or lazy... thats all...

I'm not a fan of google but they do support the community take chrome for instance $$$ for fixing bugs does steam offer that?

Exactly why I posted this in the first place.

You cannot run a successful business by not supporting the customers and the ones that support your business!

Steam isn't 14 years old.

Explain why. Yes it doesn't catch some of cheats, but it still does it job greatly.

You play on wood? It doesn't close for me, and uses only 25k KB of memory for all day.

Since there is some confusion about the Steam reference Replace Steam with Valve. I do not work for them but most people blame Steam for there broken servers/clients not Valve.

And I could keep going on this but I am sure others will chime in.

Solution
A free alternative that is not biased and open source maybe then the dreadful days of rebuilding a server once a month will be a distant memory
There can't be an open source solution to steam because part of what steam is demands it to be closed source. Protection of secrets must be enforced otherwise it would be easy to have a game without paying for it (what is part of steam mission to protect).

Now, this doesn't mean that I recommend steam. As you said, by using steam you become hostage of the way they want you to use it. But to be like it is you can't make it open source.

Everyone is linked by a steam id, this is all that is needed to allow/deny access to games that the particular person has legally purchased.

The argument for closed source has always been debated. I switched to linux back in the 90's and watched the debate between Nvidia and ATI.

Eventually someone will offer a open source solution (ex.Google) and steam/valve will be left in the dust. This is not a bash valve rant as much as it is a solution as the list of games gets bigger for valve all we can expect is more broken games! Going open is a win for both the community and the company aka Valve!

Check out Blizzard's plans for Battle.net 2.0. I heard they were aiming for something close to Steam but better. So far it isn't looking too great, though.

Steam is fine as it is.

I don't think you understood joaquim's post. If it's open-source, it means people can easily see how the client sends the "universal ids" to the validation servers, and exploit it! The validation Steam does is completely exploitable once the protocol is reversed.
