I've seen a lot of people coming here asking for support with non steam servers, and I'm just curious: Why do people run a non steam server in the first place? Steam server software is free, so they must have some other reason, but I have no idea what it is.

For the non-steam community...... if you own cs non steam and you make a HLDS from steam OFFICIAL software steam declines connections to non steam players!

What means that U'r server will just little be more popular, since there are more Non-Steam players than STEAM!

Exactly what -=3JIou-TaTaPuH=- said. The Non-Steam community is huge. Most top ranked servers are Non-Steam for that simple fact. A well maintained Non-Steam server will stay populated 32/32 nearly 24/7.

They use non steam because they very simply suck, and have no idea about the value of money.

It's all about the money. Apparently some people can't afford to spend 5 USD to buy a game yet they probably have a computer that costs 1000 USD not to mention an ISP bill.

You can buy cs 1.6 here for about 2.5-3$. Yet majority of players are nonsteamers. I was non steam player and server hoster long time ago too, but it all changed when i bought orange box and was forced to try using steam. I really hated being forced to use steam software propably because I remembered the old days back when cs 1.6 was beta and steam just started out. It was bugged and crashed all the time, but that has changed a lot past few years. I have encouraged many of my folks to buy steam, and that nonsteam is shit. Thats lolerz cause my point of view rotated 180 degrees ^^.

Have you noticed a difference in quality of players for steam vs nonsteam?

servers because there easier to populate, more gay plugins (game menu) and stuff
the game because it doesn't need the best internet for updating, and stuff. but cs 1.6 doesn't update anymore. there are loads of reasons
but hands down steam ftw, community, chatting.
edit: if you mean how people act when they have nonsteam vs steam. yeah in steam more people play by the rules, because there more mature, and old enought to buy the game via steam. and there more polite, nonsteam there just kids
