Hi guys. I've had these 2 questions for the longest of time that I was hoping someone could clear up for me:

- Is FastDL faster than Steam Workshop map download? If not, why do server owners not use the Workshop to download maps instead?

- Is it illegal to upload someone else's map on the Steam Workshop even if you credit them for it and no one else has uploaded the map before onto the Workshop?

Thanks in advance~

Could be faster or slower of course, people don't use the workshop because they feel they have less problems with their fastdl. Using the workshop is so much easier to maintain imo.

I don't know of the legality, but I see it being done a lot. If it becomes a problem for the original author/owner, they can just file a take down or would ask in comments for you to remove it. Try to get permission or get them to upload it is probably best.

Bandwidth from their CDN will probably, usually be faster than wherever you host fastDL, but with fastDL, you have the option of compressing with bz2 so that less data needs to be downloaded. You'd have to measure to know which is faster for you.

Probably not illegal, but against the Steam Workshop agreement that you have to click through at least once before you can upload anything to the Workshop. By uploading content that you don't own the rights to, you run the risk of limits/bans being put on your Steam account, more likely if users report the content or the author files a DMCA claim on it (which the site makes easy for them to do).

maps uploaded to the workshop are automatically compressed. with fastdl and csgo, maps that are 150Mb or bigger can not be bzipped or it will fail to download. A client can set maxdownloadfilesizemb launch parm to override.

Steam workshop is still a buggy piece of shit in my opinion, so I still use fastdl.

If you have limited bandwidth then use steam workshop for sure.

...for CSGO that's true, but it isn't for TF2. For TF2, you have to use bsp_repack command (in the game client?) to compress the map.
