None.
Reason will be that a VPS server is shared with other users. If you take all or most CPU for your server your host will close it.

Wether that's possible at all or not depends on the used virtualisation platform. For example, with OpenVZ and Xen it's perfectly possible to set hard limits.

This even confirms my statement. How can you say how much ressources you have? You don't even know how many users share this server. Running one or two servers that then simply start to lag because the limits changed because of another user on the server will simply start becoming annoying. I wouldn't even think about running a gameserver on a shared environment.

Not really. You can't "take all or most CPU" if hard limits are set.

By asking. I can't speak for others, but I usually want to know what I pay for.

You don't even have to know, because it's irrelevant.

The funny thing about hard limits is that resource usage by other VPSs on the same node doesn't affect yours. The only aspect that could be of influence is disk I/O.

Some professionals in the business don't share that opinion.

If you avoid overselling hosts that do not set hard limits (i.e. allow you to burst), running game servers on a VPS is perfectly fine.

if its 6 core, i dont think it means you are give all 6 cores, i think its equal share among its user. now this depends on your host if they oversell or not

i have 1 gb equal share vps where i put 1 server and its 32 slots.

max fps i put is around 400. but somtimes if somebody else is using cpu, then it does have fps drops (no lagg tho).

then again, i have no complains since i only play 6.50 $ usd /mo.

If I am not wrong in VPS they had limit of hardware usage.
So if you take like

1, 2 Ghz core / 1 GB RAM / 100 GB harddisk then its completely irrelevant that when other using the system you will lag because that much of hardware is fully dedicated to you .

And hardware is shared in shared dedicated system (mostly ) .

for more information check

*The following is not intended to be an advertisement. I am not a representative of any of the companies mentioned below.*

I have 3 virtual dedicated servers with Nuclear Fallout and they run like a dream. We tried some virtual private servers with a different host and within a week they were so laggy. It depends on your host. Most VPS systems are bad because they use OpenVZ or some crap and give you so many MHz of a processor (instead of a dedicated core) and overload their servers on top of that. In addition, most VPS retailers are infested with torrent servers or even botnets probably, which makes them even worse. NFO sells full dedicated Xeon cores (with hyperthreading threads included) on a Xen hypervisor (with 1GB of RAM per core) and you can get anywhere from 1-8 cores, which corresponds to 1-8GB of RAM, 1-8TB of monthly bandwidth and 100-800GB of HDD space. I've been running TF2/L4D2/Killing Floor servers on these babies for nearly a year, and it's been our best GSP experience ever.

Remember that any GSP you are buying individual game servers from is probably doing some sort of virtualizing anyway, just privately. Your gameserver will run with other gameservers on one dedicated server, unless you spend $250+ and rent a fully dedicated machine. It's not feasible for any GSP to run one gameserver per machine.
