is it possible to read a file from a ftp server?

Sure that it will be possible with the sockets plugin

I once tried and successfully logged in on a ftp server.
I came stuck at setting up a file transfer.

If you want to see the raw commands, goto telnet and login to an ftp server using the commands a gui ftp client uses. (smartftp is a good one ;))
