at least this version gets loaded by the server...

BUT there are no adverts shown on my cs:go server

plugin runs
no error logs
advertisements.txt is in right format (hasnt changed, worked until protobuf update)

any ideas?

On CS:S, I'm using the default version (in first post) and I don't see any problem.
I guess the changes are only needed for CS:GO.
