I have seen people doing it without decompiling and recompiling. I don't remeber what the problrms regarding that are.

If it is crashing already for you, you should deco/reco.

Mind however that you actually have to get the permission of the level designer.

Also some maps are protected and because of that you will have to rebuild parts of the map after decompiling.
