i just bought another server(linux), saw some tutorials on how to make the hlds because it was'ent ready made. can someone send me a good link that helped them? i'm using putty and winscp to put in the files, and when i turn on the server through putty, the server works, but when i exit putty, the server turns off...
the start up line i used was:
./hlds_run -binary ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +sv_lan 0 +maxplayers 24 +port 27015 +ip 82.135.228.147
i also tried without binary, then i tried:
./hlds_run -binary ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike exec start.sh i don't know why....

Use screen

screen -A -m -d -S hlds ./hlds_run .....

To enter the server:
screen -x hlds

so it should go like this:
cd /usr/hlds (the hlds dir)
then screen -x hlds?
and then -A -m -d -S hlds ./hlds_run -binary ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +sv_lan 0 +maxplayers 24 +port 27015 +ip 82.135.228.147

cd /usr/hlds
screen -A -m -d -S hlds ./hlds_run blablabla

then screen -x hlds (to enter the server console)

ok, so i typed it in as you said. cd /usr/hlds
then -A -m -d -S hlds ./hlds_run -binary ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +sv_lan 0 +maxplayers 24 +port 27015 +ip 82.135.228.147 and nothing came up. then i wrote screen -x hlds and it said
There are several suitable screens on:
3069.hlds (03/27/10 16:59:53) (Detached)
3054.hlds (03/27/10 16:58:03) (Detached)
Type "screen [-d] -r [pid.]tty.host" to resume one of them.

You wrote screen before -A -m -d -S right?

Try: screen -x 3069 or screen -x 3054

yeah i did. should i also write chmod +x hlds_run then chmod +x hlds_i686? it says the port is already in use because it thinks the server is in use now. so then i tried 27016 and it says there is no screen to be attached matching 3069

What linux are you using?

killall screen
then try starting the server:

cd /usr/hlds
screen -A -m -d -S hlds ./hlds_run -binary ./hlds_i686 -game cstrike +map de_dust2 +sv_lan 0 +maxplayers 24 +port 27015 +ip 82.135.228.147

ok, so no one told me about the command & at the end of the command line and no one said you had to type logout after. dso it works now =]
i know this place dose'nt support non-steam, but what i'm about to ask isn't about non-steam. i install dproto, and i wanna restart the server. the crappy place i got my server with has no control panel to turn the server on and off. what are the commands? thanks for the help DeLiriuM
