That does not stop you from setting up OpenDNS.

If you are wanting to use the modem/router that you've been given, you should ask your ISP. If either they can't help you or they don't want to help you, buy your own router and bypass the ISP's router (use theirs as only a modem; this is the only way I will ever use a ISP supplied piece of junk).

It will be easy if you buy a tp-link router
You can block traffic based on the mac address or an ip range.

You are not, I have my tp-link router connected to the ISP router... I only use the ISP router as a modem. All the traffic go first to the tp-link router so I can block what I want.

personally I don't like TP-Link, but D-Link routers are more reliable. an example: the DSL-2750U (up to adsl2+) is so great if compared to other low range products.

other suggestions: mac adress filtring (restrict the access to your router only for known computers). and reconsider previous suggestions please, don't ignore if you don't understand .

Tell that to my overheating DIR-655. Each time I stream a movie to my TV using DLNA from NAS to TV it overheats within 5 minutes and crashed my whole LAN.
It also crashes when many people are on my servers.

Luckily ASUS makes some awesome routers (rt-ac68u) that doesn't overheat, since changing I haven't had any issues.

That is not true. Every single modem and router that I've ever used has had the option to DMZ (which is what you want to do in your modem to send all traffic to your router). If you don't have the option, you should be able to replicated it with router settings in your modem.

It could be. There are ISP's that doesn't allow you to enter to the router settings, they control it remotely... for example if you need to change your wifi password you have to use their online panel (At work I have a router that is setup like that). In my case, it's a Cisco router.
