I would think that when they release the API it will be cross platform, and probably either available separately from Steam or via the Steam console tool IE something like

# ./steam -command update -dir ./sdk -game "source sdk" -user bla -password bla

Currently you can only get the SDK tools if you bought HL2.
Hopefully they won't push this policy with the engine interface.

All sounds good, except for:

No flat-file configuration.
Having a GUI can be handy. But being able to go pull up a file in my text editor is very useful when something goes wrong.

But then I prefer unix /etc than windows registry. You might even say I abhor the windows registery.

Unfortunately a flat file configuration does not fit into SourceMod's model. The administration system is database based, such as OpenLdap. Imagine writing something like phpBB using flat files instead of some SQL abstraction - it would be nightmarish.

Another good example of this is CUPS, which is web-based because the configuration model is large.

Yes, VALVe has developer their own Metamod for HL2, and we will be using that. We've even requested a few features, but they won't add them yet

They are developing their own metamod eh?.. I wonder if it will be as good as their own cheat protection...

As for the GUI thing.. Personally I really like the plain old txt files. I vote for keeping it the old way.
