Everything in the menu handler remains the same? meaning normal function of a menu getting the item info of what the player selected?

Yes. It simply destroys the other "new style" menu when another "new style" menu is shown (again, only as long as the menus are consistently displayed with Show[Local|Global]Menu() functions and not menu_display().
