You have to compile your own SMX for this. The one you copied is the one I compiled so it has the include file for the hub which is designed to throw an error if hub is missing.

I basically did everything, I compiled without hub, set up the vmt correctly, got a trail in the correct place, put it in features.cfg, yet in the menu it says "None", nothing else? What am I missing?

Your vmt/vtf files are probably not in the right location on the server. Post a directory listing of where you put all the VMT/VTF files on the server and your features.cfg file.

Do the default trails show up as missing textures for anyone else?
It also seems that my custom trails are crashing people and myself when you see them.

If the VMT/VTFs are correctly installed then they work. Check for proper VMT/VTF linking and make sure clients are all downloading this by clearing out your custom materials.

They do for me now for some reason, what could be causing this? They used to work until very recently...

So i downloaded the sp but I don't know what to do with it. What parts in it do i remove to get rid of the Hub plugin included since i dont have hub.
