No... He has to have positive karma.... At the time when he gave it to you, it was probably -1 or 0

The reason it has shown up as gray can only happen when one of two things happen.
1) The user doesn't have the minimum post count required to affect karma. (3 posts)
2) The user doesn't have the minimum reputation(karma) required to affect karma. (0 karma)

Actually i've had no + or - karma, in the User CP it says:

There are no subscribed threads to display in this folder for this time period.

Senior members simply give 2 karma rather than the traditional 1 when adding karma. When removing karma we still give -1.
