You mean chromosomes.

Through genetic disorders, they may have "X" (lacking of an "X" chromosome), "XXX", "XXY", and "XYY" (there are others as well).

Those of the XXY genetic disorder (Klinefelter's syndrome) may appear to have certain "feminine" qualities *cough* *cough*.

Currently, one cannot have their gender changed (or disorder cured) on the chromosomal level.

Oh yeah, I'm sorry for not performing my duties to AMXX's off topic board. The turtles' WTF list. Do you agree with their choice? State your opinions!

True hermaphrodites, in the very specific sense in that they have two functional sex organs, are so rare as to be a scientific curiosity. In fact, there are almost no confirmed reports, and very few "reports" in general.

A number of "partial" hermaphrodites are possible, such as elongated clit, partial penis, and penis with partial hole. These are generally fertile from the primary sex organ, but has secondary sexual organs/characteristics.

Chromosomes are not what make you male or female. Hormones, typically PRODUCED by chromosomes, are what make you male or female. Two extreme cases which prove this are when a male does not utilize testosterone, or a female produces testosterone, producing an XY female and XX male, respectively. These usually are sterile, but in some cases, if the development occurs early enough, they can be fertile (barely though, usually deformed sperm or malshapened eggs).

A number of chromosomal defects that are not readily detectable include XYY, XXX (my genotype), and a few other unusual varients. The more additional chromosomes, however, the more chance for retardation and severe side effects. An example is XXXXX syndrome, very very rare, but utterly debilitating for the 23 or so odd sufferers.

And, finally, there are those who believe they are the other gender. Sometimes, this is caused by chemical imbalances, or true side effects of gender mutilation of babies to "correct" them, but in many cases, it is simply psychological in nature.
