Yes, someone would recommend this, but it's not always best for your use scenario.
Try it and find out, but running barebones is totally not necessary, ProxMox is great and I use it in some cases. I would not use Ubuntu but that's just my personal opinion, not a requirement.
As
@ThePwnt put it, standard kernel first, running tuned should be your first steps. Then you can try different kernels like
XanMod,
Liquorix, or
building your own.
There's also different types as well, like Real Time.
