Oh wait, I just realized I was mentioning the entity limits and not the precache limits, whoops.

Valve can change the various precache limits independently of one another in Source, not sure about GoldSrc.

I know they did bump the model limit up in CS:GO. I assume it has to do with Valve continually adding more models to the game through their economy stuff aka Skins.

It probably helps that Source can actually scale to the new limits and defines them in 1 place.
