Oh wait, I just realized I was mentioning the entity limits and not the precache limits, whoops.
Valve can change the various precache limits independently of one another in Source, not sure about GoldSrc.
I know they did bump the model limit up in CS:GO. I assume it has to do with Valve continually adding more models to the game through their economy stuff aka Skins.
