are there any reasons that are rational to change the SteamID format?
I'm just interested in it...

OT: The steam format was changed to be consistent with the other games using the format already.

Probably to allow all different types of Steam Accounts to use a common format (TF2 Servers have a SteamID of [G:1:###], has been that way for a while)
