I think you put it in the wrong folder. searchplugins folder has only .xml files.

That's because some of us are still using the old firefox from the begining, we kept on updating from the old browser, but if we uninstall firefox, and download the new copy of firefox, the files in the searchplugins folder will all be in .xml format.

Make sure you have it in the searchplugins folder instead of plugins folder. Happened to me too.
