Now even when you create a server, you have to be well protected...
Look, there is coop servers on HL2DM, most of them (those who have players) went all down from repeated DDoS, forcing many people to change host to have a better protection. And people don't even know why or who ATM.

DDoS can happen for really weird or nonsense reasons such as someone pissed off.
