I think the old menu style doesn't have many restrictions on sizes of menu options, so I think you should go with that if you are looking to increase character amount for menus.

old menu system is not hard, you just have to paginate yourself.

Exactly I didnt want to complicate myself with re-indexing items through key events on every page.
