I wanna host a friendly tournament with my friends from Thailand but they have bad connection to my internet.

So what I was thinking is, since I'm not planning on spending much for a gameserver in Singapore, I wonder if it's possible to just get a vps, setup a vpn and let them connect to the srcds server hosted in my house but with the good routing via the vpn.

P.s I have no clue when it comes to all these networking stuff, so go easy on me

The idea of improving a clients ping/latency using a VPN or proxy is probably bad. Honestly it might only make the connections worse because now their jumping through more hoops to connect to the server.

The only way this would make sense is if your VPS was on your VPN. You could rent a server in AUS (might be cheaper) and its closer if my geography checks. I know my AUS players connect fine to our data center in Kansas and Phoenix. You'd in this case need a good upload speed, not just down speed. I know my up speed is only a third of my download speed.

Get a SG or AU VPS with OVH. Their discovery offers have good CPU and cost about $5/m. Pretty cheap for the region and they handle them pretty well.

But the latency without a vpn is horrible (200 ms). So I don't think it could be any worse than this.

Okay I tested the ping and it's good. However I have an issue where the port is open on my local router. However I cannot connect via the vpn ip. When I use portchecker, it shows that the port (27016) is closed.

My personal rule of port forwarding for Source engine is starting at 27015 and opening by increments of 5. You don't want ports to close to one another. Example:

Server 1 ip:27015
Server 2 ip:27020
Server 3 ip:27025

And what I said earlier was if your VPS is on your VPN in other words your server is on your virtual private network.

Not to burst your bubble here, but by having them connect through your VPN will only introduce additional latency between the server and the client.

I think that's what Halt is trying to say, he's also trying to say that instead of hosting the VPN on your local internet, you should just run the srcds on the local internet and have both parties connect to you via that, if the connection isn't too bad.

Sorry if I wasn't clear but this is exactly what I'm saying. thanks Mitchell

Hence why you need a good up speed.
