If your server is crashing before the updater can update it, download the latest 1.4.3 or 1.5.0 snapshot and overwrite your gamedata directory with the one from the archive.

I'm having crashes on Linux. Haven't looked into yet to see what's causing it though.

Confirmed, servers start and suddenly console freezes.
Only fix is to disable SourceMod.

Hmm, I don't have a regular server, but my TF2 Freak Fortress 2 server (Ubuntu Linux 10.04 64-bit) using MM:S 1.8.7 and SM 1.4.2 seems to be working OK, although it only had 8/24 players on it when I last checked.
