The two character trick works because the HL engine is reading it as if it where UTF-8 directly.

Like Arkshine & Owyn said, saving the sma file with UTF-8 character encoding will get you the same results.

Because á (á really is two bytes long) cost the same amount of bytes and is the same value of á.

Exactly. All 1byte characters (The ones from ASCII) will be the same in UTF-8, though the ASCII Extended are not the same.

You mean lowercase?
