Dear community,

I am thinking about getting into modding CS:GO for quite some time already and since I finally got semester holidays I decided to give it a try. That's why I joined, so hi lads .

So I went ahead and set up a 128 Tick server on my VPS.
However, I noticed that, although I do have a pretty strong VPS, the server wasn't running smooth at all.
Specs:
Code:
4 Cores of Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-2630 v4 @ 2.20GHz - 12 GB RAM - 300GB SSD - 100 Mbit/s
The SV value (net_graph 1) indicated spikes, going up to 20+ and with only a single user connected (me), the server already worked on up to 45% CPU Power. I assume it has to do with the virtualization technique used.

So I am considering to rent a Dedicated Server. I actually prefer to keep the coast as low as possible, but this is what I'd ideally like to host:
  • 1x KZ Server
  • 1x Surf Server
  • 1x Retake Server
  • 1x Private Server (for Developing purpose)

Is there anything I need to take specialised care of, before renting a server?
Like, does CS:GO require something specific? Is it for example roasting a lot of Bandwidth or unusually high CPU usage?

Server should be located in Europe, preferable in the north, but central is fine as well. What specs do you recommend? Any provider you guys can endorse?

-Oswin

P.S. If this is the wrong section, I am sorry moderators.

Welcome!

2.2ghz is an incredibly low CPU speed for SRCDS. Virtualization will cause some overhead, especially depending on the system that is being used. Also, ensure all power saving features are disabled!

Thanks!

Yeah I assume already, that this would be the issue. Regarding my researches CS:GO is most likely CPU intensive. Power savings are off, but my possibilities are fairly limited, since it's only a VPS.

Do you know a bit about dedicated servers? I am currently browsing sites and there are pretty good offers, but I would have to pick between an Intel Xeon E3-1246V3 and Intel Core i7-4770. Both are older CPUS, however the Xeon seems to have a slightly better benchmark, so I'd go for that. Also I'd probably feel pretty bad for using an iX Core within a server, just feels wrong, lol.

How important is server location? Would there be a noticeable difference between hosting in Frankfurt, Germany or Helsinki, Finland? For me, Helsinki is almost 2000km further away, but I am not sure if that's an issue at all.

Finally I assume 1GBit dedicated network access and 20TB of traffic should be enough?

Sorry for asking all these technical questions, I am not the worst when it comes to PC hardware, but server technology is quite different. :p

The E3-1246V3 is a good CPU.

I used to host the following on a Gb connection with 10TB.

1 x 24 slot 1v1 @ 128tick
2 x 9 slot retake @ 128 tick
1 x 22 slot casual @ 128 tick
1 x 30 slot skill surf @ 64 tick
1 x 30 slot bhop @ 64 tick
1 x 10 slot dev server @ 64 tick

Distance == ping

With standard configuration, E3-1246V3 has a better single core performance, scoring 9.3 (E3-1246V3) vs. 9.1 (i7 4770), according to cpuboss.com, so that way it may indeed be the best one for CSGO, although the difference seems to be minimalistic .

Within most of those nearby, European countries, you'll usually end up on around 28-40 ms with ping.

Running the close to you (and/or your intended visitors) will always be the most ideal, ideally in the same country, though if that is not an option, you can choose any of the neighbouring countries.

One thing to mention is that if you run it in another country, you could run into issues with your target audience not seeing your server in the browser.

If you rent a server with a German provider, the IP allocations have obviously been allocated to the company in Germany by the IP registries (e.g. RIPE for Europe), and as such, all the geographic data for the IP address will say Germany, and according to some posts on this forum, it may cause issues with the server not being found for e.g. French users, if those are your target audience.

A few companies out there are claiming that they will set the country of your IP address to another one, but those have since ~2013 been a big scam, unless your provider does it for at least a /24 network (of 256 IP addresses) at once, which close to 0% does.

The game itself won't use that much traffic, even 1 TB allowance should be more than enough.

What can/will use a lot of traffic, is your web server for sv_downloadurl ("FastDL") if you will operate a such one on your own. I suggest running that on a separate machine.

Thank you for all your replies.

I ordered a dedicated with following specs:
  • Intel Xeon E3-1246V3
  • HDD2x HDD SATA 2,0 TB Enterprise
  • RAM4x RAM 8192 MB DDR3

I guess that should seal the deal. Thanks for your help guys and thanks for the detailed and technical answers. Also thanks for recommendations via PM.

Great community!

64tick bhop server unheard of!
