I wiped the server, re-installed it and loaded a clean cfg. MOTD showed once at random. I installed my usual plugins and the MOTD went blank.

I wiped and installed again with the intention of reverse-engineering the server, no SM, no MM, clean cfg and it failed to load at all.

I have come to the conclusion this is in fact something wrong on valve's end.

Resurrecting this thread 6 years later since I decided to rebuild my L4D2 server again and I'm still having the same issue with my MOTD not displaying upon connecting to the server either via lobby or direct connect.

Standard text works for showing basic server commands but in comparison to the aesthetic appeal of HTML and images standard text just looks tacky, however HTML is still not showing as was the original problem years ago.

Has anyone made any progress on their MOTD displaying properly? If so, would they mind sharing their MOTD code for reference?

Maybe they will fix it after another 10 years.

It seems both server-side and client-side bug. So, nothing we can do.

The problem is on the client side!
More precisely, downloading the workshop file. If you disable all mod subscriptions, motd will work.

you can test this yourself by running the game without waiting for the mods to fully load to connect to the server, and you will see a working motd window. if the mods are loaded earlier, you won't see them.

I just have joined the game before workshop loaded and still can't see the MOTD.

After more research it's apparent the L4D2 MOTD not displaying properly has been an issue for years and continues to be such.

I do feel better knowing it's not an issue caused by my error.

There you need to join very quickly before loading the workshop

I have this problem only in addon-enabled servers.
