When do YOU restart your server?

Just curious to see what time of the day you guys restart your server, as well as how often in a day do you restart it?

I currently have a midnight restart and a middle of the day restart... both are like 12 hours apart. The middle of the day restart is kind of random and sometimes drops my player base around 4 pm lol.... what do you u guys think? Is the mid day restart really needed, or you think a server can generally be fine on an HL1 engine with 1 restart? and about 25 players daily.

You should try doing a server restart once every 24 hours, if you notice significant performance degradation then go back to the every 12 hour restart. This obviously depends a lot on any plugins you may be running, population, etc.

Somewhere in 2-6 AM seems like a good time to do a restart. Probably the least amount of players would be on at that time.

The time at which you do it should be based solely on the traffic in your server. Do it when you have the least likelihood of having a significant number of players. Nobody can tell you the best time except you and your regular players.

Is there any way to auto-restart your server? Some script or maybe a plugin?

When I mean restart, I mean RESTART THE SERVER, not the round or map

The default script provided with HLDS actually has a mechanism to restart the server if it crashes. If your server is using this then you can execute "quit" on the server and it will fall back to that script to restart it. If this is enough (and your server's implementation supports this functionality) then you can do that from a plugin.

Otherwise, to do a full restart of a server (stop and then start), you have to do it at the OS level (if you rent a server from a game server host, you have to ask them to implement it).

We had a debate in my community a while back on when the best time would be to restart the server. This might sound crazy, but we found out the best time it to restart is at 6PM. The reason being, players will reconnect fairly quickly and the population will stay at a good average. But if for example you restart at any other time when there is a less amount of players online, you might not get everyone connecting back, and therefore you screwed your late-night population.
