I know about the -autoupdate launch options but my server is hosted at a data center and I have to connect via ssh. How can I make it so it'll shut down the virtual machine and re-boot it automatically?

For automatic shutdowns when an update is released, you'll want Automatic Steam Update.

To get the server to automatically restart and update, refer to the -autoupdate, -steam_dir, and -steamcmd_script command line options.

If you're asking about OS distribution updates (because you're asking about the VM for some reason, which is outside the scope of the TF2 server), just do those manually.

My server is on a virtual machine, here is my vps's control panel. I have to completely shut down the VM and boot it to apply a server update right? I'm trying to make that part automated.

You need to shutdown the TF2 server in order to apply the update, correct. You don't restart the actual machine.

I have the launch options pointed to the update script
Code:
login anonymous
force_install_dir ./tf2/
app_update 232250
quit
but it keeps getting stuck or something and it redirects to stderr.txt but gets stuck their after that.

EDIT: Got it fixed, thought it was supposed to be a shell script not a .txt file..
