Yes, I think they are. I think the gaming community is shifting away from community-based gaming to casual, impersonal gaming experiencing. Most new multiplayer games don't even allow for community servers, and I think it reflects a general transition in what players want.

Yes, kids prefer to gamble these days. (pack openings, flashy animations)
And also games are starting to require less and less actual skill to play. Its all about getting that sweet hormones triggered in your brain.

Edit: Yes, Valve actively killing off community servers with each update doesn't help either.

The biggest decline for CS:GO communities came recently when Valve disabled the ability to server ads through MOTD. Which goes to show that their revenue to stay alive came purely from ads and not from contributions/donations from their player base. Along with some communities who relied on their MOTD to server content that was necessary for players to perform certain actions.

I think, in csgo, valve own match system (officials servers) killed community servers. -.-

It's the same story for TF2.

I agree with that. It's very hard for a community server base to compete with the ease of one-click gaming.

Same, and in the meantime lament the loss of community servers. It's a horrible cycle.
