Hello i was thinking of this with servers for cs and googled a little
and well what i understand (have no experience with this with servers except uploading to ftp ) you can run a server on your webhost if you have ssh access but it didnt tell more in detail how it works so i was wondering if someone could tell me a little about it.

Thanks in advanced.

Run it on a webhost? That sounds like it would be against many webhosting policies somehow.

Also, webhosts usually have limited bandwidth usage per month so that would get used up mighty quick unless you paid for unlimited.

lol ....

1. IF "you have SSH"... no body give any extra details for a webspace !!!

2. its like a normal server.... u have ftp to upload & ssh to start/stop or whatever ....

imagin you´r server is running on one PC "root/server"
a FTP host is the same. whats diffrent? : u have just access to the ftp & not the console. i hop u could understand me.

about limited bandwight : i have unlimited & this costs not to much. only 20€/m

If this is shared hosting, I doubt it will be allowed. I'd be sure that they would notice the high CPU usage and investigate it

When you say localhost it is normally 127.0.0.1 regardless of the location.

ssh = secure shell

With ssh you can log in to other computer anywhere and use text only commands. I use it to do everything on my linux server. There are no files being transmitted or received during an ssh session like there would be with an ftp (file transfer protocol) session.

what about from an external hard drive? would you be able to run a cs server from it?

It would be a dedicated server im guessing? if this is possible.
