This has been added to v1.5. You can enable / disable the messages in:

cfg/sourcemod/sm_knifeupgrade.cfg

I don't know what would be causing the crash on your server. Without a log I can't really help. If more people report server crashing after using this plugin, I'll look into this further. Are you running my plugin at the same time as other knife plugins?

OP: Maybe add a cvar to give knives at spawn? Would be good for maps/servers that usually dont give knife at spawn.

Are you asking for a cvar to have the Knife selection menu be displayed when the player first connects, instead of only being able to have it be displayed on each spawn?

This has been added. I recommend setting the sm_knifeupgrade_welcome_menu to 1 for these types of maps. The plugin will not give the default knife, but should give a custom knife to players that choose one even if they don't have one equipped.
