with the extension "updater.ext.dll" included with sourcemod 1.4, is there a need to run the .smx as well?

updater.ext.dll is the SourceMod autoupdater, not the plugin autoupdater.

Grr, I'm getting spammed with this:

It's probably a permission issue of some kind... what directory should I chmod? Everything updates still. It's just annoying.

Steam(Tools) is probably trying to write to a temp location in addition to the one specified. I'll have to ask asherkin about it.

Edit: ~/Steam/appcache/httpcache/

A question ? Does this install the SMAC modules , when a new version of them just been released or the server has to restart to take the updates?

I only skimmed over it, but be aware when pushing an update not to overwrite someone's custom config. You might also have to test that the model files aren't write-protected while the plugin is running. If it is then you may have to use Updater_OnPluginUpdating, or just not update the model files unless you plan on changing them.
