The plugin is working without any problems and you should use it.

It's barely possible to change user's nickname to [multi] colorful,unless you remove nick from sent messages, and use colors in prefix WHICH contains also the name.

You can do everything you said with that plugin. Take a look at the configuration file - you can make the chat look however you like.
