Port issue? If the dedicated server and game are on same pc(bad idea to begin with), one will use 27015 and itll force the server to use 27016 I believe. Maybe a port needs forwarding?

Thats exactly what I was thinking, before I thought he had a server rented someplace, which was odd because he could use console to access SM but couldn't connect.

I remember when I was hosting a game a while ago it was very buggy connecting, I had to ether use my external IP to connect or 127.00.1 (I dont remember which).
Also there was a snafu with port forwarding on my router...

hmmm, well i haven't forwarded a port but i'm not so sure I would really on be able to run the dedicated server and game on the same computer, as no otherone has L4D installed. If theres a way to tell what port the dedicated server is using and the port L4D itself is using I could try forward a port.

It just doesn't make any sense, why I used to be able to join my own dedicated server and then it just stopped working with this stupid connection failed error. If there is anyway of just restarting or re installing the server I'll try that.

Ok, I just tested how to do it, here's how:

• Open your server menu.
• Pick a non default port
• Run your server.
• Open L4D, in console type "connect" plus whatever is listed as the ip/port in the server window.
  Example: connect 192.168.2.15:1337

That should get you connected to the server. Joining via the server browser doesn't seem to work.
If you want other players to be able to join you need to give them your external ip + port.
Example: 75.555.172:1337
