is there a function that would return the "m"? such as get_lights or something? Or would i just have to set the letter in a variable?

no there is no function to return it...
just make a variable that holds the current string

new light[30] = {}  //whatever u like from A to Z (#OFF is off)
.
.
public whatever(){
   set_lights(light)
   .
   .
}

haimmaik is right, so you would have to combine your script that gets the light value with a one that sets the light.
