Use workshop, in this case, all problems are solved Steam.
If the map is not present in the workshop, download it to.

Or just sm_cvar net_maxfilesize 100
Hmm interesting, by default net_maxfilesize appears to be 16. I assumed it wasn't a server-side issue, because the client always downloaded the full bz2, then once it realized it was over 150mb it just dumped it and tried to re-download the .bsp. I thought net_maxfilesize had no effect on fastdl downloads, am I wrong? https://developer.valvesoftware.com/...et_maxfilesize

What do you mean?

If people took a moment to listen they would realise you dont bzip files larger than 150MB unless you expect every player to use the override.

It's simple. JUST DONT BZIP FILES > 150MB.

Ass I said, that command also works server side, in commandline. That's the solution not using smaller maps.

Ridiculous? No, not really.

Some legacy machines form the stone age will have problems decompressing too large files, causing huge game hung ups and potentially crashes.

To protect against such things, a sane value like 150 MB is set to make sure that it won't cause problems for most.

With the Internet that we do have in most countries these days, you wouldn't gain anything in terms of speed, "Downloading BSP" versus "Downloading BZ2 + Decompressing", as the decompressing would also take time, slowing down the whole process with the client being in the loading screen.

This was introduced after rouge servers had been parsing small files that extracted to GBs in size. It was done to block this exploit.
