I had that problem when I was trying to install Windows on to my RAID setup. My solution was to give Windows setup the driver for the raid card (press F6 at the begining of the WinXP setup when it says so to install the driver. Click the "Load Driver" button in the Vista setup to install the driver)

Which ever driver is for the OS you are trying to install. For me, I had to use the Vista64 driver.

Try installing a Unix based OS to it. See if that detects the drive.
