Maybe it's because you have no item modules loaded is to why It's telling you that you have no categories to show?

I was looking through the tutorial and it showed them making test items that didn't require any item modules. I'll test it right now though

I just added the trails module and created a new trail item with a category that required the store-trails.smx plugin and reloaded it with store_reloaditems and the problem still persists.

I got it working. Add the materials/models..etc add the module plugins store-trails.smx..etc and you're good.
