Why is it stupid? It protects the servers from malicious assholes.
Client-side Server plugins is a commonly used method of exploiting servers, because the learning curve to get started is so flat.

Protecting server integrity vs. catering to people too lazy to work out SRCDS.
I think the choice is obvious, for the people likely to be in this community anyway.

What I do is rename the addons folder to addons2 whenever I go to play on real servers.

Gurluas, sorry, but this is the state of things. By running client-side plugins you can run local cheats and escape VAC detection. It is a flaw in Valve's architecture that they have shown no signs of addressing.

The only solution for server admins is to kick players with plugins loaded.

Is it not possible to make a whitelist of allowed plugins? or be able to unmount plugins? It should be.

It's not all plugins that this message pertains to, it's specifically detecting SM/MM:S in your case.
You can't unload MM:S due to how much it's tied into the engine and how valve's plugin system doesn't clean up. (blame valve)
You can unload SM from MM:S (thank the MM:S team) but you'll still get kicked for MM:S.

How can you even exploit it?

Exploits aren't to be discussed here.

ROFLMAO

If you want to put a server up, a few minutes with your friend google will get you all kinds of tutorials and probably sample launcher scripts etc. too. It really isn't that hard to get a basic server going, or to go from "basic" to "very well configured" once you have it going.

Valve is presently working on changes to the client that will prevent clients who have loaded ANY addons to connect to VAC-secured servers and/or servers that have cheats disabled. It's already in beta for CS:S, and I'd be extremely surprised (and disappointed) if they didn't make the same changes to their other games once it is ready and working well. So if I were you, I'd probably not waste a lot of effort on juggling server plugins on your client. If running a server is really why you're trying to load addon plugins, just set up a dedicated server. You don't HAVE to learn much about servers to have servers that work.
