It can't be some mysterious problem, because you either set the ports right or wrong. Sorry to tell you but, you should try to google search for something like: half-life dedicated server+port forwarding and try it again. My guess is that you did that wrong, because firewalls have nothing to do with it, and don't take it off, you'll get hacked. I used to run my server off of steam successfully + with a firewall.

Ofcourse he has a router, can't forward any ports if you don't have a router.

That really doesn't make any sense, Peli. Because you can't forward ports without a router he must have a router ? Eh...

Anyway,
1. Turning off your firewall is stupid & telling people to do so is stupid as well.
2. All Norton security software sucks, get rid of it as soon as possible.
3. Decent softwalls block both outgoing and incoming traffic unless the user approves. Unlike Peli said softwalls can (and should) block your gameserver traffic unless you approve.

Bonafide, remove Norton and get a decent firewall like Kerio or Outpost. Then read this and the manual of your router (if any) and you'll be able to fix it.

Peli, you dont have to have a router to forward ports.

You probably didnt open them up right, or you didnt forward them to the right computer. What kind of router do you have?

I have a linksys BEFSR41v2 router i took the steam ports test on the page you told me to look at:
UDP Ports: Passed
The following UDP ports were reachable.
UDP Port: 27000 - 27040

TCP Ports: Passed
The following TCP ports were reachable.
TCP Port: 27020 - 27040

Yet me and my friend can find it.... i even tried searching it on game-monitor.com
